There will be about 19 percent increase in the Slum population in the country by end of 2011. It was 75.26 million in 2001 and is expected to touch over 93 million by 2011. The assessment is based on the census of slum population in over five thousand cities and towns across the country. These details are part of Pronab Sen Committee report released by the Minister for Housing and Urban Poverty alleviation Ms. Selja in New Delhi today. The Committee was appointed by the government to look into various aspects of slum statistics. It has recommended adoption of appropriate indicators for identifying the slum.The committee submitted its report on 30th of last month. Ms Selja said that the committee has also recommended for formulation of a policy for counting the slum population even in cities having less than 20 thousand population. This she said is important to achieve the goal of slum free India under the Rajiv Awas Yojna.
