Sri Lanka Freedom Party, SLFP led by President Maithripala Sirisena has said it is in favour of constitutional changes which do not require the people's approval at a referendum.<br/><br/>Party spokesman and State Minister Dilan Perera told a press conference today that President Maithripala Sirisena's mandate was to carry out changes which did not need a referendum because holding a referendum could be risky given the trend in some other countries.<br/><br/>His comments are in sharp contrast to earlier stance of President Sirisena who had promised to abolish the executive Presidency as part of framing of new constitution. SLFP has framed a national unity government with United National party, UNP led by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe. UNP has favoured wide ranging changes in constitution including greater devolution of powers to Tamil majority provinces.
