SL Prez sets time frame for resettlement of displaced citizens

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has directed the concerned authorities to complete the resettlement of the war displaced Tamil civilians from the transitional centers by 31st January 2010 ahead of the anticipated poll announcement.<br/>Announcing this on Saturday, Senior Presidential Advisor and Parliamentarian Basil Rajapaksa said that the restrictions imposed on the movement of civilians in the internally displaced persons' centers will also be lifted with effect from 1st December 2009 .<br/>The confinement of the war affected civilians in the state run camps coupled with the lack of freedom of movement has been a major international concern.<br/>According to the Government, more than one lakh people have been resettled over the past few months in the Northern and Eastern region of the country. <br/>Meanwhile, there are reports of representatives of the Sri Lanka Tamil and Muslim parties including the pro-LTTE Tamil National Alliance (TNA) meeting in Zurich, Switzerland, to take stock of the ground situation in the post-Prabakaran island nation.<br/>Sri Lankan Social Welfare Minister Douglas Devananda, who heads the Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP), told BBC Tamil Service from Zurich that though there is no fixed agenda, the objective behind the conference was to arrive at a ‘common ground’ on issues affecting minorities in Sri Lanka.<br/>
