SL Parliament extends emergency further

The Sri Lankan Parliament on Tuesday extended the state of Emergency in the country ahead of the January 26 Presidential election by another month with 97 members voting in favor of the motion and 18 members voting against it.<br/><br/>The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) voted against it while the other opposition parties such as United National Party (UNP), Janata Vimukthi Perumana (JVP) and Sri Lankan Muslim Congress (SLMC) abstained from voting.<br/>Meanwhile, Government members and members of the UNP and JVP traded charges in Parliament over the alleged involvement in the procurement of military supplies by the son-in-law of the former Army Commander and presidential candidate retired General Sarath Fonseka.
