SL court records statement of Fonseka on granting approval to suspicious tenders

The Sri Lanka Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today informed court that they had recorded a statement from the former Army Chief General Sarath Fonseka regarding the granting of approval on four suspicious tenders to a firm allegedly run by his son-in-law, Dhanuna Tilekeratne whilst serving as the chairman of the tender board.<br/><br/>According to local media reports when the inquiry into the HiCorp, the reported firm of his son-in-law, case was taken up in the Court, the CID informed that they recorded a statement from General Fonseka last Sunday. He told the CID that he had no knowledge of the owners of British Borneo Defense Company and HiCorp Ltd Company.<br/><br/> A local court had earlier issued arrest warrant on Fonseka’s son in law . Since the issue of arrest warrant his son-in-law has been reported missing and his mother was picked up after raid on lockers in local banks reportedly belonging to her revealed over five lakh US dollars and large sums of Sri Lankan money. Later she was released on bail.<br/><br/>Fonseka, the defeated consensus opposition Presidential nominee, is in the military custody since February 8 on a number of charges. One of the allegations against him is that he had favoured his son-in-law’s firm.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, the visiting British Shadow Defence Secretary Liam Fox, speaking to reporters this evening after meeting Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said that General Sarath Fonseka should be tried in a civil court where transparency will be paramount.<br/><br/>According to the Foreign Ministry the two leaders discussed wide range of issues including post conflict development, the recent decision by the EU on the GSP+ and the setting up of a special fund by Dr. Fox to assist in the post conflict development of Sri Lanka.
