Sixty six Indian nationals, including 11 women and 12 children, were safely evacuated from Abidjan, the capital of civil war-torn Ivory Coast and taken to neighbouring country Ghana.According to a statement of the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi last night, the Indians were flown to Ghanian capital Accra on a Boeing 737 aircraft chartered by the Ministry and were given necessary consular and other assistance by the Indian High Commission officials there. The situation in the country remains unstable, with sporadic gunfire heard. About 1,500 people have been killed across the country and a million forced from their homes during the stand-off, which began in November when Mr Gbagbo refused to accept he had lost the presidential election.The fighting in Abidjan has left streets littered with bodies and parts of the city in the grip of looters. Humanitarian agencies say conditions are also worsening in the west of the country, where many people have fled their homes in fear of retaliation.Contrary to earlier reports, the United Nations says the former President of Ivory Coast Laurent Gbagbo is still being held in the country's main city, Abidjan. Earlier, a UN spokesman said Mr. Gbagbo who was arrested on Monday had been taken out of the city.Mr. Gbagbo's spokesman said Generals who have been fighting on his behalf, have now sworn allegiance to the internationally-recognised President Alassane Ouattara. Mr Gbagbo's arrest on Monday ended a four-month power struggle that plunged the country into chaos. There was confusion about his whereabouts on Tuesday, with the UN retracting an earlier claim that Mr Gbagbo had been moved out of Abidjan.Meanwhile, the country's former interior minister who was arrested alongside Mr Gbagbo has died in mysterious circumstances. Desire Tagro was seen wounded when he was taken into custody. He was reported to have been taken from the Golf Hotel, which has been Mr Ouattara's base for the past five months, to a clinic where he subsequently died.
