Six MPs among 30 killed in Mogadishu hotel attack

Islamist insurgents in the Somali capital, Mogadishu say they carried out an attack on a hotel in which more than 30 people died including six Members of Parliament.The attackers made their way into the hotel compound dressed as government security guards before they began shooting. The Government says, at least thirty people died including half a dozen parliamentarians. But, the rebels who said they were behind the attack, claimed as many as sixty may have died. At least 70 people have died in two days of fighting between Al-Shabaab militants and Government forces backed by African Union troops. The UN Security Council today condemned the suicide attack in Somali capitalMogadishu, Mr. Vitaly Churkin, Russia's envoy to the UN and current chair of the Security Council said, the members of the Security Council express their condolences to the families of those killed in the attack as well as to the Transitional Federal Government. They call for the perpetrators to be brought swiftly to justice.Meanwhile, Al-Shabab, the insurgent group in Somalia with links to al-Qaeda, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
