Senior space scientist Dr K.Sivan has been appointed the new chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization ISRO. <br/><br/>The Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet gave the approval for his elevation today. Dr Sivan is currently the Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, an arm of the national space agency ISRO. <br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports that Dr Sivan will be at the helm of affairs of the ISRO, one of the world's most renowned space agencies, for three years since assuming his charge. <br/><br/>ISRO sources told AIR News, he would take over from Dr AS Kiran Kumar, the present chairman, after the PSLV Launch scheduled on the twelfth of this month. The day coincides with the completion of Dr Kiran Kumar's three years term the same day. <br/><br/>Dr Sivan graduated in aeronautical engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology in 1980 and completed his post-graduation in aerospace engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru in 1982. <br/><br/>He joined ISRO the same year and later did his Ph.D. in IIT, Bombay in 2006. Dr Sivan is considered an expert in rocket fuel technologies including cryogenics. <br/><br/>Under his stewardship, the ISRO will be launching several prestigious scientific missions like Chandrayaan-2 and other utility based space missions.
