As the situation is limping back to normalcy in the earthquake ravaged Sikkim, the attention now is getting shifted towards restoration work gradually. While the national highway no. 31 A, the sole lifeline to Sikkim connecting Gangtok to Siliguri, remains open for normal traffic, the BRO has succeeded to a large extent in restoring the vehicular traffic along the roads in the worst affected North district as well as in other parts of the state.However, the road connecting the North district headquarter Mangan to Chungthang remains in a very bad shape beyond Tung as it has been washed away at many places. On the other hand,The BSNL has succeded in restoring the landline phone traffic to Chungthang from on Saturday.Seven teams of National Disaster Response Force are deployed for search and rescue operations at Shipgyar, Biha, Bringbang Ramam, Lingzya, Dzongu, Chungthan and Lachung. Over 5500 Army personnel located in Sikkim have been pressed into relief and rescue operations.Some one thousand civilians have been treated at Military hospitals while 28 civilians, evacuated by Army helicopters are currently under treatment at Military Hospitals. Approximately 10,000 food packets have been air-dropped so far in the northern part of North District. Another 5000 food packets are ready for dropping at Chungthan, Lachung and Lachen. Fifteen Army and Air Force helicopters have been pressed into relief and reconnaissance work and 150 sorties have been carried out by them so far. Some 850 ITBP personnel too are engaged in rescue operations, who have also been running relief camps for the rescued villagers.
