Situation in Kishtwar under control: Chidambaram

Finance Minister P Chidambaram told the Rajya Sabha today that the overall situation in the violence-hit Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir is under control since Sunday. Replying to a brief discussion on the subject, Mr. Chidambaram, who is currently looking after Home Ministry, assured the House that every citizen in Jammu and Kashmir will be protected.

Giving details about the group clashes in Kishtwar and other places in the state, Mr. Chidambaram said three people were killed and 29 others injured. Mr. Chidambaram said the police have arrested some people and more arrests are expected.

In response to the demand by members for a high level enquiry into the incidents, Mr. Chidambaram said that the state government has ordered a judicial enquiry and the report will be available within three weeks. On the ban of the entry of political leaders, he assured the members that they can visit the state as soon as the situation is normal, which is expected soon.
