The National Commission for Minorities,NCM, today described the situation in riot-hit Kandhamal district in Orissa as 'very peaceful'.Vice-chairman of the Commission, Dr HT Sangliana, who returned from a two-day visit to Kandhamal, told media persons at Bhubaneswar that the district has both ethnic and communal problem. Forceful conversion in the district must be prohibited along with reconversion. He also said, both Central and state government need to do a lot to bring development and make the local tribal and minorities feel secure. Dr Sangliana further said, no one is staying in forests in riot-hit Kandhamal district. The Orissa Government also needs to speed-up compensation and rehabilitation programmes in the district with giving more emphasis to education to address the problems. On the people living in rehabilitation camps in Kandhamal district, he said some of them still fear to return back to their villages, while some do not want to go back for lack of employment opportunities. Tribal dominated Kandhamal district of Orissa had hit international headlines during 2008 for riots among different communities.
