Situation in J&K not out of control: Omar

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that the situation in the state is not out of control and asserted that he would do his best to deliver on the best to the people. <br/><br/>Talking to the Week magazine, he said, the credibility of his government and his own image have been dented by the recent incidents of violence involving stone-pelting and action by security forces. He, however, asserted that he would not run away and leave the field, as he is not a weak person. <br/><br/>Omar said that the stone-pelting incidents and strikes in the valley are symptoms of a wider problem, which is that people on both sides of Line of Control have been fed on a diet that there is a problem in Jammu and Kashmir that needs to be resolved. When referred to the statement by PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti that the state government has declared war on the people, Omar said the opposition party could have acted responsibly and tried to end the violence and bloodshed, but they chose to make it worse.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, curfew continues in Srinagar and many other towns for fourth consecutive day. District Magistrate, Srinagar, Mehraj Ahmad Kakro told Air that if peace prevails during the day, curfew may be relaxed in the city later in the evening. No local news paper was published from Srinagar on the second day. <br/><br/>Authorities have decided to issue curfew passes to all accredited journalists today. In a related development, police in Badgam district have arrested an activist of hard line faction of Hurriyat conference after his conversation with another activist was intercepted by intelligence agencies showing involvement of hurriyat in instigating protests and killings in the valley.<br/><br/>The Top brass of the Congress today met in New Delhi to discuss the current situation in the Kashmir valley. The Home Minister Mr. P. Chidambaram briefed the Core group of the party about the latest situation in the valley. During the hour long meeting chaired by the party president Mrs. Sonia Gandhi the latest developments were discussed at length. <br/><br/>On the other hand, BJP today demanded an explanation from the government on the outcome of the recent high level talks between Home Minister P Chidambaram and his Pakistani counterpart. Party spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters in New Delhi that the transcripts of the conversations between the terrorists in Pakistan and their menials in Jammu and Kashmir are evidence enough to show that people from across the border are fomenting trouble in the state. He said, the BJP had been warning Prime Minister Manmohan Singh against taking hurried decisions in holding talks with Pakistan.
