Situation improves in BTAD; Sonia, Shinde to visit Assam today

UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde will visit Kokrajhar and Dhubri districts of Assam today. They will visit relief camps and meet the people who have taken shelter there. They will also take stock of the relief and rehabilitation measures being carried out by authorities. The two leaders will also hold talks with the representatives of various civil society organizations.

Meanwhile, Asom Gana Parishad, AGP, has accused the government of being negligent in providing security to the inmates of relief camps. The party also termed the state government's plan to have all displaced persons back in their homes by 15th of this month as impractical. All Bodo Students Union, ABSU has welcomed the move to conduct CBI and Judicial probes into the violence in Bodoland Territorial Area District.

The visit of UPA Chairperson and Union Home Minister will gear up the efforts of Assam government to restore permanent peace in the region. Earlier, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and then Union Home Minister P Chidambaram visited the violence hit areas. The Prime Minister announced 300 crore rupees for the relief and rehabilitation measures. Dr. Singh also assured to provide 2 lakh rupees to the next kin of those killed in the violence. Assam government announced six lakh rupees each to the families of those killed in ethnic clashes. Both the Centre and state government declared that their top priority is to rehabilitate the displaced people.
