In the violence hit three districts of Assam, situation is gradually returning to normal. No untoward incident has been reported since Thursday. In the Kokrajhar district, day curfew has been lifted from 6 am today.
Curfew has also been relaxed for 11 hours from 7 am in Chirang district and for 14 hours from 8 am in Dhubri district today. Around 150 people have been arrested for their involvement in the violent acts. About three lakh affected people have been rehabilitated in 250 relief camps .
AIR Guwahati correspondent reports that patrolling by the para-military force and the Assam Police have been intensified to keep a close watch on anti-social elements. About 65 companies of para-military forces have been deployed in violence-hit districts.
The Army is also staging flag marches .
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has said the violence was handiwork of the miscreants to create disturbances. He visited the violence-affected areas of Kokrajhar on Thursday. He assured that whose houses had been burnt down, would be given new houses under Indira Awas Yojna. 12 additional ambulances, 30 doctors and Para-medical staffs along with life savings medicine have been deputed so far. The Assam Government has also suspended four officers for negligence in duties.
Members of various civil society organisations visited the violence-hit districts and took stock of situation. A team of the State Legislative Assembly also visited Kokrajhar and Chirnag district. The team asked the State Government to expedite relief works.
Meanwhile, State Home Secretary said the death toll had gone up to 45 while 10 people were missing. Another 45 people sustained injuries.
AIR correspondent says the situation has improved further in the three violence-hit districts. The District Administrations today relaxed curfew for a few hours in all the three districts to enable people to come out and purchase their daily requirements.
On Saturday, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will visit the violence-hit Kokrajhar district to review the steps taken to control the situation by the Government.
