During the festival, people fast, bathe in the river, and  thank the Sun God for  the gift of life on earth and for fulfilling their wishes. Devotees offer sacrifices and pray for blessings to Goddess Chhath (Chhati Maiya) and Lord Surya (Sun).  It is believed that people's heartfelt wishes and prayers  bring blessings.
