Singapore's founding father and the first Prime Minister has announced that he is retiring from the Cabinet. Lee Kuan Yew who held an advisory post said he was stepping down to give the younger generation a chance to lead. He governed Singapore between 1959 and 1990 winning eight elections as head of the People's Action Party. Despite a victory in the last elections the Party's share of the vote fell to sixty percent. This was the worst result since its fifty years in power.
