Singapore Superseries: Sindhu enter second round; Prannoy, Srikanth, Jayaram ousted

In the Singapore Superseries Badminton Tournament, India's P V Sindhu advanced to the second round of the Women's Singles event while it was curtains for Indian men in the singles section.After Sindhu broke into top the 10 rankings chart last week, she is the only Indian in Women's Singles section in this event as Saina Nehwal opted to rest.In the opening round match, Sindhu defeated Thailand's Busanan Ongbumrungphan, 9-21, 21-17, 21-11 in a tightly contested match. She will meet unseeded Chinese He Bingjiao who has defeated 7th seed Tai Tzu Ying in her first round match. However it was disastrous day for Indian male shuttlers as HS Prannoy, K Srikanth and Ajay Jayaram all bowed out in the opening round of the singles event. This will affect their World ranking and chances of qualifying for the Rio Olympics. Meanwhile, mixed doubles pair of Pranaav Chopra and N Sikki Reddy advanced to the second round as they prevailed 21-15, 21-17 over Indonesian pair of Irfan Fadhilah and Weni Anggraini. They will next take on fourth seeded Chinese combo of Xu Chen and Ma Jin.In Men's Doubles event, Pranaav Chopra and Akshay Dewalkar also moved to the second round after they defeated Chinese pair of Liu Cheng and Lu Kai 21-17, 16-21, 22-20.
