Singapore's Parliament Speaker Halimah Yacob will contest for the Presidential election in September this year, becoming the first woman to run for the highest office. Sixty-two year old Halimah will step down as the Speaker, a post she has held since 2013, and as an Member of Parliament. Announcing her decision, Halimah, who is in public service for 40 years, she said that taking part in the Presidential election will allow her to continue with her service to the people of Singapore. <br/>The Straits Times reported that she will also resign from the People's Action Party, where she is a member of the Central Executive Committee. This presidential election will be held in September. <br/>The upcoming election is reserved for Malay candidates, following changes to the law last year to ensure the Presidency reflects Singapore's multiracial society. Chinese, Malay and Indian are three major ethnic groups.
