Singapore Airlines to temporarily ground its Airbus A380 jetliners

Singapore Airlines said it will temporarily ground all its Airbus A380 jetliners after an A380 superjumbo operated by Qantas Airways was forced to make an emergency landing due to engine trouble. Singapore Airlines, which was the first airline in the world to launch A380 commercial flights in 2007, said yesterday it will delay all flights involving the A-380. The airline said in a statement that the engine manufacturer Rolls Royce and aircraft manufacturer Airbus have advised them to conduct precautionary technical checks on all A380 aircraft following an incident involving another operator's A380. Qantas Flight QF32 departed Singapore for Sydney at 9:56 am yesterday carrying more than 400 passengers but developed an engine problem shortly after takeoff. It returned to Singapore's Changi Airport for an emergency landing and landed safely at 11:45 am with no one onboard injured. Passengers interviewed on a Singapore television station said they heard one or two loud bangs during the flight. Singapore Airlines currently has 11 A380 jetliners in service flying to seven cities, namely Sydney, Melbourne, London, Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Zurich.
