Sindhu advances to second round of Singapore open

India's PV Sindhu advanced to the second round of the Women's Singles event at Singapore Superseries Badminton Tournament. She defeated Thailand's Busanan Ongbumrungphan, 9-21, 21-17, 21-11 in a tightly contested match yesterday. She will now meet unseeded Chinese He Bingjiao, who defeated 7th seed Tai Tzu Ying in her first round match. However, Indian male shuttlers HS Prannoy, K Srikanth and Ajay Jayaram bowed out in the opening round of the singles event. Mixed doubles pair of Pranav Chopra and N Sikki Reddy advanced to the second round as they prevailed 21-15, 21-17 over Indonesian pair of Irfan Fadhilah and Weni Anggraini. They will next take on fourth seeded Chinese combo of Xu Chen and Ma Jin.In Men's Doubles event, Pranaav Chopra and Akshay Dewalkar also moved to the second round after they defeated Chinese pair of Liu Cheng and Lu Kai 21-17, 16-21, 22-20. India's women's doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa, continued their dismal run as they crashed out in the opening round after a 18-21 16-21 loss to Korean combo of Go Ah Ra and Yoo Hae Won. Indonesia's Pia Zebadiah Bernadeth and India's Sikki Reddy also lost 7-21, 6-21 to Japanese pair of Shizuka Matsuo and Mami Naito in another women's doubles match.
