Karnataka is seeking higher Silk import duty. A delegation comprising Union Ministers – Veerappa Moily and K H Muniyappa and State Labour and Silk minister in the state Bache Gowda will meet Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Textile Minister Anand Sharma on Wednesday to press their demand.Gowda said in Bangalore today that cut in import duty of silk from 30 percent to five percent has made Chinese silk cheaper reducing demand for Indian silk. He said it has created hardship to Indian silk reeling units and silk growing farmers.Out of 19,000 metric tonne of silk produced in the country, about 8000 metric tonne is produced in Karnataka and eleven lakh people are dependent on it.
