In Sikkim, taking yet another step towards empowerment of women, the State Transport, i.e. the Sikkim Nationalised Transport, has decided to appoint more and more lady Bus Conductors. The Department has been encouraged to do so by the performance of the two lady Bus Conductors who have been appointed for the first time to run the buses. The two Sikkimese lady conductors, Pemala Bhutia and Jyoti Subba, have successfully completed seven months as Conductors for the government run city buses in and around the capital Gangtok, proving that women too can compete with men in every sphere. These two ladies were among the ten Bus Conductors appointed in October last year. A senior official of the Sikkim Nationalised Transport told our Gangtok correspondent that the department will give special preference to educated Sikkimese women for the posts of Bus Conductors for new buses to be introduced in future.
