The Sikkim Government has sought help for rebuilding efforts from the Centre as well as from all institutions across the country working in the field of seismology.It has also suggested the setting up of a Centre for Seismic Studies in Sikkim, to cater to the Himalayan and the North Eastern region.Coming out of the shock of the 18th September’s devastating earthquake, Sikkim now plans to emerge as a model State in the country in terms of earthquake forecasting, effective disaster management and charting out earthquake resilient development formats.The State has proposed evolving a permanent Disaster Relief Plan of Action for the State with appropriate senior level representatives of Army, Border Roads Organization, NDRF, INTACH and other Central Technical Agencies under the Chairmanship of a Senior Officer of the State Government.The National Disaster Management Authority’s Post-EarthquakeReconnaissance Team has identified several initiatives that will help Sikkim effectively manage such disasters in future.The State Government has requested the Authority to set up a State Institute of Disaster Management in Sikkim. It has also requested the Union Government to consider a Special Central Assistance for rebuilding the earthquake hit State during the 12th Five Year Plan period.
