Fresh tremors were felt in the earthquake ravaged Sikkim on Thursday night, forcing the panick-striken people to rush outdoors once again. The Met office sources in Gangtok told that the tremors, felt at around 10.15 pm were of an intensity of 3.9 on the Richter scale. Its epicentre was located somewhere in the State itself and the tectonic movement took place at thirty kilometres beneath the surface.
On the other hand, the State government has asserted that it is fully geared up to provide relief to the Sunday’s earthquake victims in the state. The Chief Minister Mr.Pawan Chamling is undertaking a tour of North, South and West districts to take stock of the situation from Friday.
The State Government has decided to reopen all such government schools from today which were not damaged much in the Sunday’s disaster. On the other hand, the Army rescued 161 people including 10 African engineers, working for a private power developer, 26 foreign tourists and the locals from Lachung and Saffu areas on Thursday.
The Army has assured that there are no more tourists stranded in earthquake affected areas of the North district. Besides, more than 300 injured persons have also been evacuated from the worst affected areas of Dzongu and Lachung by the Army choppers till now. Meanwhile, additional resources required by the Border Roads Organisation for restoring the North Sikkim roads are being airlifted from Delhi which will soon be reaching at the site for carrying out the works faster.
