Sikkim: Filing nominations for elections to seven municipalities closed

In Sikkim, after closure of filing nominations for elections to seven municipalities today, a total of 42 nominations were received for Gangtok Municipal Corporation, Singtam Nagar Panchayat and Rangpo Nagar Panchayat in East Sikkim district. In South Sikkim, 22 nominations were received for Namchi Municipal Council and 15 were received for Nayabazar Jorethang Nagar Panchayat.<br />'' <br />''For West Sikkim's Gyalshing Nagar Panchayat, 15 nominations were received while 11 candidates filed nominations for Mangan Nagar Panchayat in North Sikkim. Scrutiny of nominations will be undertaken tomorrow and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is until 3pm on 11th March. Polls to 51 municipal wards will be held through 90 polling stations on 31st March and votes will be counted on 3rd April.<br />'' <br />''<span style="color: #222222;">The state government has ed a new section 14 A in the Sikkim Municipalities Act, 2007, which does not allow any person to contest polls with the direct or indirect support of any political party. The tenure of municipal bodies in Sikkim ended on 16th October, 2020, but the election was delayed due to the COVID19 pandemic.</span><br />
