In Sikkim, fresh tremors of low intensity were felt in the North district at around quarter past six this morning. One person was killed when he slipped off a vibrating suspension bridge at Passingdang in the district. The epicenter of the tremors, measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale, was located some 34kms north of Gangtok. On the other hand, a six hundred metre long tunnel is to be constructed at Theeng on the Mangan-Chungthang Road in North district at an estimated cost of around twenty five crore rupees. The construction of the tunnel assumes much significance given the fact that the large scale landslides triggered by the last month’s devastating earthquake had rendered the entire Mangan-Chungthang road beyond Theeng completely inaccessible. This will help avoid frequent landslides hampering the smooth flow of vehicular traffic,particularly during the Monsoon, to popular tourist destinations of Gurudongmar and Yumthang valley. The tunnel, to be completed jointly by the Border Roads Organisation and the Sikkim Power Development Corporation by December next year, may be extended to a length of about two kilometers in future. This will ensure an all weather vehicular traffic to the entire area north of the district headquarters Mangan like Chungthang,Lachung, Lachen and Gurudongmar.
