In Sikkim, Chief Minister Pawan Chamling today began a five day long tour to the North district, the worst affected in the last month's devastating earthquake. The Border Roads Organisation has declared the Managan-Chungthan-Lachen and Managn-Chungthang-Lachung Roads in the district open for the vehicular traffic. However, tourist vehicles are still not being allowed by the State Government as a precautionary measure.Our correspondent reports that this year's tourist season is yet to take off since, the Gangtok-Nathula JN Road too has yet not been cleared for tourists traffic.”Soon after the killer earthquake jolted the State, Mr.Chamling announced his decision to not celebrate Dussehara or “Bara Dasain” and Diwali or “Tihar” this year as a mark of respect to the departed souls.While relief and rehabilitation efforts were being undertaken , the Chief Minster continued to visit the affected areas in the State even during the Dussehara vacations Now,during Depawali holidays too all the senior officials of the rank of Joint Secretaries and above have been asked not to go on leave by the State Government.The cabinet ministers, head of departments and district officials have been directed to accompany the Chief minister on tour to Mangan,Lachen, Lachung, Dzongu , Chungthang.and Saffu areas . in the North district.On the other hand,though the Border Roads Organisation has declared the Managan-Chungthan-Lachen and Managn-Chungthang-Lachung Roads in the North district and the Gangtok-Nathula JN Road in East district open for traffic, the State Government has not opened these to the visiting tourists, fearing that the roads are still not capable of handling the heavy rush of tourists vehicles. Consequently, the popular tourists destinations like the high altitude alpine lakes like Gurudongma and Chhangu , the picturesque Yumthang valley and places like Baba Mandir and Nathula remain inaccessible for the visiting tourists
