Sikkim Avalanche: Search and rescue operations at Gangtok-Natu La Jawaharlal Nehru Road called off

In Sikkim, search and rescue operations at the snowslide accident site at 14 Mile on the Gangtok-Natu La Jawaharlal Nehru Road were called off today with no further recoveries. Speaking to media persons this evening, Gangtok district collector Tushar Nikhare informed that the search operations were suspended around 3:30 in the evening after the rescue teams didn't find any trace of anyone trapped under the snow. Mr Nikhare informed that the Tiranga mountain rescue team's specialised radar system was used to trace the snowslide-affected area. The helpline nos. launched by the administration will continue to work. The accident claimed seven lives and injured around 13 people yesterday.<br />''  <br />'' Mr Nikhare said that the natural disaster and the subsequent rescue operation will help the administration better prepare for such calamities in the future. He informed that such vulnerable locations will be identified with signages, and parking and selfies will be banned at these locations. He allayed fears related to safety and reassured that Sikkim is a safe destination and there are no plans to restrict tourism, with the weather permitting.<br />''  <br />'' Mr Nikhare added that five bodies have been handed over to victims' families, all expenses for treatment are being borne by the Sikkim government and exgratia payment to victims and their families is being processed. SP Gangtok Tenzing Lepcha was also present.
