Sikhs celebrates 540th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak

The 540th birth anniversary of the founder of Sikh religion, Guru Nanak Dev is being celebrated with religious fervor and dedication today. It was on this day in 1469 that the first Sikh Guru was born at Nankana Saheb, now in Pakistan. A series of functions are being organised in Gurudwaras across the country and abroad to mark the occasion.<br/><br/>Devotees thronged the tastefully eliminated Gurudwaras since early morning to listen to Sabda Kirtan and discourses on his work and life. The day marks culmination of about a fortnight long Prabhat Feries. Guru Ka Langar that is community kitchen is being arranged at various places.<br/><br/>The President Mrs Pratibha Devi Singh Patil, the Vice President Mohd Hamid Ansari and the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh have greeted the people on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti.<br/><br/>In her message, the President said that Guru Nanak Devji's message of universal harmony and unity is ever relevant and eternal.<br/><br/>The Vice-President, while conveying his good wishes on Guruparv, described Guru Nanak Dev as an apostle of universal love and spiritual faith.<br/><br/>Dr Manmohan Singh, in his message, said the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev, of peace and unity is very relevant in today’s world. <br/><br/><br/>Meanwhile, Kartik Poornima is being celebrated in different parts of the country with devotion and religious fervor. A large number of people are taking the holy dip at the banks of river Ganga in Varanasi. At the Sangam in Allahabad also, large number of people have gathered to take holy dip. People started reaching Ayodhya since Sunday evening to have a dip in river Saryu and worshiping in the temples of Ayodhya. The kartik poornima mela has already attracted lakhs of people at Garhmukteshwar.<br/><br/>In Rajasthan, thousands of devotees are reaching Pushkar near Ajmer to take a holy deep in the sacred waters of Pushkar Lake. The district administration has made elaborate arrangements at all the 52 Ghats for the Kartik Maha Snan. The devotees will also offer worship in Brahma Temple which is the only temple in India of Lord Brahma.
