Shyam Benegal panel submits report on Censor Board functioning

The Shyam Benegal committee has recommended that Central Board of Film Certification should only be a film certification body whose scope should be restricted to categorizing the suitability of the film to audience groups on the basis of age and maturity. <br/><br/>In its report submitted to Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley today, the committee said, the board can refuse certification when a film contains contravenes the provisions of Cinematograph Act. <br/><br/>It said, certification can also be refused, when content in a film crosses the ceiling laid down in the highest category of certification. It said, the applicant must specify the category of certification being sought and the target audience.<br/><br/>Reacting to the Benegal Committee report, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Col Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said that things will become simpler now and there will also be a second part of the recommendations.<br/><br/>The panel was set up on January this year to take a relook at the functioning of the board. The committee was asked to take note of the best practices in other parts of the world, especially where the film industry is given sufficient and adequate space for creative and aesthetic expression. <br/><br/>The panel also includes actor-filmmaker Kamal Hassan, filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, adman Piyush Pandey and film journalist Bhawana Somayaa, among others.
