Shrinking strength of Cong in RS will make GST happen: Jaitley

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said shrinking strength of Congress in the Rajya Sabha will make Goods and Services Tax (GST) happen. He said the main opposition party will loose on numbers in the next round of bi-annual elections for the Upper House and even the number of their nominated supporters in the House will come down.

Talking to reporters in New Delhi, Mr. Jaitley rubbished Congress remarks that the April 1 deadline for rolling out GST would not be met as the government is yet to complete preparatory work for the new indirect tax regime.

The Minister said most of the states are on board for GST and it is possible to implement it even in the middle of the year. The Constitution Amendment bill to roll out GST is stuck in the Rajya Sabha where the ruling NDA does not have a majority. Congress is seeking some changes in the bill, including a constitutional cap on the GST rate.
