National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon arrived in Dhaka on Sunday by a special flight on a two day visit to Bangladesh. He was received at the airport by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Adviser for International affairs Dr. Gowher Rizvi, Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India Mr.Tariq Karim, and India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh Mr. Rajeet Mitter. Mr. Menon held discussions with Bangladesh Prime Minister’s Adviser for Economic affairs Dr. Mashiur Rahman and Adviser for International affairs Dr. Gowher Rizvi. Mr. Menon will call on Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday. He will also interact with senior journalists of the Bangladesh media during his stay in Dhaka. Mr. Menon’s discussions with the Bangladesh leaders and officials will be focused on the various agreements to be signed during the visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Bangladesh. Earlier in the month, the Bangladesh Prime Minister’s two advisers had visited New Delhi to hold discussions with Indian officials as part of the preparations for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s upcoming visit to Dhaka on September 6th and 7th this year. Both sides are hoping to sign several historic agreements during the visit which include an agreement to resolve outstanding land boundary matters and an interim agreement on sharing of the waters of Teesta and Feni rivers.AIR correspondent reports, National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon’s visit to Dhaka is part of the series of high level visits from India in the last two months to finalize the agreements to be signed during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s upcoming visit to Bangladesh. Earlier in the month of July, External affairs Minister S.M Krishna and Home Minister P. Chidambaram visited Dhaka to firm up the agenda for Prime Minister’s visit. Apart from this, bilateral ties were further strengthened during the visit of UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to Dhaka in July when she was presented with Bangladesh’s highest Freedom Honour award in recognition of former Prime Minster Indira Gandhi’s contribution to the 1971 liberation war. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is expected to be accompanied by Chief Ministers of the five states neighbouring Bangladesh on his visit to Dhaka. Dr. Manmohan Singh’s visit will be the first bilateral visit to Bangladesh by an Indian Prime Minister after nearly twelve years. Several historic agreements related to land boundary issues, transit protocol, sharing of water of Teesta and Feni rivers, power sector, trade and investment, railways, education and culture are expected to be signed during the visit.
