Shipping ministry preparing legislation to replace Indian Ports Act

The shipping ministry is preparing a new consolidated legislation to replace the Indian Ports Act. Revealing this Shipping Minister G K Vasan on Thursday said his ministry is also taking a series of initiatives to increase the operational proficiency of ports in the country. Outlining policy measures, while launching the maritime agenda 2010-20, Mr Vasan said his ministry has set a target of handling about 2500 million tonnes of cargo by 2020.The minister said a new policy on dredging will be unveiled soon. He said his ministry is working to develop two new major ports one on each on east and west coast. Mr Vasan also announced to form an Indian Maritime Development Council and development of the tourism potential of lighthouses.
