Shipment of 2 million eggs imported from India by Sri Lanka State Trading Corporation to reach island nation during weekend

A shipment of 2 million eggs imported from India by the Sri Lanka State Trading Corporation will reach the island nation during the weekend. Sri Lanka has been facing a shortage of poultry eggs which resulted in a price hike. Earlier in January, egg prices had risen to over 70 Lankan rupees per egg.
''
''The government's forced price reduction in the market through state-run Consumer Affairs Authority's control has been met with refusal by the egg producers to sell at lower rates. Egg producers in the island nation had rejected the government's request to reduce egg prices. The government's decision to impose a ceiling resulted in many poultry producers not supplying eggs to the markets until the prices increased.
''
''The government had decided to import eggs in order to fulfil demand. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan Agriculture Ministry has said that the eggs imported into Sri Lanka will be used only in the bakery industry.
