A freight ship carrying eight Sri Lankan nationals has been reportedly hijacked off the coast of Somalia. A statement by Sri Lankan foreign ministry said, initial enquiries have revealed that the vessel is not registered under Sri Lankan flag but had an eight member Sri Lankan crew. It said, the ministry is in touch with shipping agents, concerned authorities and its missions abroad to ascertain further information in the matter.<br/><br/> Earlier, a Navy Spokesman had confirmed that eight Sri Lankans were on board the freighter. He said, a number of suspected pirates had boarded the vessel off the Somalia's northern coast yesterday. If confirmed, it would be the first hijacking of a commercial ship by Somali pirates since 2012.
