The oil giant Shell has dropped plans to drill in waters off the coast of the American state of Alaska this year after it was refused the necessary government permits. The multi-billion dollar plan was shelved after the Obama administration called a temporary halt to off shore drilling following the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico last year. Environmentalists say Alaska cannot withstand a similar disaster.
