Shashi Tharoor flags India's concerns over Chinese presence in Sri Lanka

Former Minister of state for External Affairs and Congress MP Dr. Shashi Tharoor has warned that China in the guise of promoting economic relations with Sri Lanka, may end up with military intervention in the island nation.

Delivering his keynote address at the launch of a political biography of Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in Colombo last evening, Dr. Tharoor said China has a history of interfering in the internal affairs of another country as the legendary Chinese Admiral Zheng did in the 15th century as part of its maritime silk trade initiative.

The former UN Under Secretary General said, China 's ambitions have extended into the Indian Ocean and the prospect has caused anxiety in a number of states that have been looking to India as an alternative security provider.

His comments came as China's increasing investment in Sri Lanka particularly in port sector has attracted widespread attention in strategic circles. A chinese state owned company is developing Colombo port city project while another is in the process of getting majority stake in Hambantota port. Sri Lankan government has however, maintained that its relations with China are purely economic in nature.
