Sharad Pawar takes over as ICC President

Former President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Mr. Sharad Pawar has taken over as President of International Cricket council (ICC) at the ICC's Annual Conference in Singapore today. The spokesperson of ICC, James Fitzgerald told AIR's Dubai correspondent that he has taken over from David Morgan, who concludes his two-year term.

According to a statement of ICC, Mr Pawar thanked Mr Morgan for his impressive innings as ICC President during the last two years. He added that David Morgan has set the principles by which the ICC operates and now it is his responsibility to build on his legacy.

Meanwhile the election of a new Vice President seems to have been delayed as ICC Executive Board in its meeting in Singapore yesterday recognised following lengthy consideration that the nomination of John Howard, put forward by Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket did not have sufficient support within the ICC Board. The statement adds that no vote was taken on the issue. Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket have been asked to re-nominate a candidate for Vice President. Media reports say that former Australian Prime Minister John Howard's bid to lead ICC as vice president has been thrown out after a revolt by Asian and African nations.
