Government says, the Shale gas policy will be finalised early next year. This was revealed by the Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Jitin Prasad on the sidelines of Petro Tech-2010 in New Delhi on Monday. The cooperation in exploring shale gas will be one of the important features of discussion between the captains of industry of India and US during President Obama's visit later this week. According to Oil and Natural Gas, it is estimated that shale gas in some of the country's sedimentry basins such as Damodar and camby basin, is between 35 to 90 trillion cubic feet. The ONGC took the initiative five years back to explore shale gas and has now hired the services of experts. In the United States, shale gas contributes nearly 14 percent of the total gas production.
