An earthquake with an intensity of 6.8 on the Richter scale on Sunday jolted the Northern and Eastern parts of the country.The Director, Indian Meteorological Department, Mr. R. C. Vasisht told AIR that the epicentre of the quake was located at Latitude 27.7 degree North and Longitude 88.2 degree East. The quake which was felt for some seconds around 6.11 PM triggered panic among the people.People at many places rushed out of their houses in panic. The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh spoke to the Chief Minister of Sikkim and assured him of all help. He also directed cabinet secretary to call an emergency meeting of National Disaster Management Authority to take stock of the situation.Chief Secretary of Sikkim Karma Gyatso says that two persons have been killed and 33 injured in the devastating quake. He said that several buildings developed major cracks in the state.In West Bengal, electricity connection was snapped in Siliguri and Coochbehar districts. Disaster Management teams have been kept ready to meet any eventuality. AIR Kolkata correspondent reports that the government has sounded alert throughout the state. AIR Kurseong correspondent reports that as buildings shook, glass panes were broken.In Assam, a moderate intensity earthquake, measuring 6.1 in the Richter scale, rattled most parts of the State at around 6.21 this evening. According to Indian Metrology Department sources, the epicenter of the quake has been located in Sikkim-Nepal border.Tremors were also felt in various parts of Bihar and people rushed out of their houses into the open. Tremors were also felt in Darbanga district of North Bihar.Reports of mild tremors have also come in from different areas of Chhattisgarh including capital Raipur.In Uttar Pradesh, mild shocks were experienced in Gorakhpur and Basti. Reports of tremors have also come in from Jaipur in Rajasthan. The quake was also felt in certain parts of Delhi.
