Several States announce welfare programmes to mark Republic day

Special parades, announcing of welfare programmes and functions marked the celebrations of Republic Day in the states. The Odisha government announced 1 rupee per kilogramme rice scheme for the poor from next month. He also said his government will soon set up fast track court for dealing with crimes against women.

In Maharashtra, Governor K Sankarnarayanan unfurled the national flag in the main function at Shivaji Park in Mumbai. He disclosed that an investment of 40 thousand crore rupees is being planned for the textile industry to create lakh jobs. He said that cases of crime against women will be dealt with in fast track courts for speedy delivery of justice.

Unfurling the national flag at Jammu, the state Governor Governor N. N. Vohra said that in the past two years there has been a decline in the incidence of terrorist violence. He said that this was due to the role played by the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He said because of the supreme sacrifices made by the State Police and Security Forces the State is moving ahead on the path of peace and development. The impressive march-past was witnessed among others by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

In Chhattisgarh, tribal population in the Maoist bastion astar defied Maoist dictates and celebrated Republic Day although the rebels blocked dozens of roads in forested interiors. Reports from Dantewada, Sukma, Bijapur, Narayanpur, Kanaker, Bastar and Kondagaon districts which together form the Bastar region said tribals came out in large numbers to attend Republic Day celebrations.

In Assam, the main function was held at Khanapara Veterinary College Playground in Guwahati where Governor J B Patnaik hoisted the tricolour in presence of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. Defying the boycott call of several insurgent groups, people from all walks of life participated in the celebration.

In Andhra Pradesh, pomp and gaiety marked the Republic Day celebrations. Hoisting the national flag Governor E.S.L. Narsimhan expressed satisfaction over implementation of welfare programmes for rooting out the causes responsible for naxalism in eight district of the state.

The main celebration in Uttarakhand was held at the Parade Ground in Dehradun with Governor, Dr. Aziz Quershi unfurled the national flag.

In Sikkim, Governor Balmiki Prasad Singh unfurled the National tri-color at Palzor stadium in Gangtok and said Sikkim since its merger in 1975 has moved rapidly on the path of sustainable and inclusive economic development.

Reports of Republic Day celebrations have also come from other state capitals and across the country.
