Several rivers in Eastern UP in spate; flood situation in Assam grim

In Uttar Pradesh, rain continued to lash almost the entire state during the last twenty four hours. Several rivers including Ganga, Yamuna, Ghaghra and their tributaries are swelling again due to heavy rain in their catchments. The rivers in eastern Uttar Pradesh are also in spate due to heavy rainfall on the heights of Nepal. AIR Correspondent reports that torrential rain is continuing in Gorakhpur where 343 millimetre of rainfall has been recorded in last 24 hours.

Heavy to moderate rainfall has occurred in Bundelkhand and eastern regions while Gorakhpur, Basti and Faizabad divisions have witnessed 10 to 30 centimetres of rainfall. Normal life has been paralysed in the eastern region due to torrential rain. Roads, residential areas and even government offices have been waterlogged. Electricity supply has been disrupted for several hours as power stations at some places are inundated. Road and telecommunications remain disrupted in the eastern region.

Meanwhile, rescue and relief operation is in full swing in 20 flood affected districts of Uttar Pradesh. At least 52 people have lost their lives in the state in the current rain and flood fury. The Met office has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall during next 48 hours in the eastern region of the state.

In Assam, flood situation remained grim in several districts today, as the Brahmaputra and its few tributaries are maintaining a rising trend. Met department has predicted heavy to very heavy rain in several parts of the state and also the neighbouring states in the next 24 hours. Official reports said that three relief camps have been set up in the worst hit Dhemaji district.

More than 750 people have taken shelters in the relief camps .District administration are distributing relief materials .Flood water completely damaged 15 houses in Dhemaji district. Surging water severely damaged crop land and road communications at several places. Most of the roads and Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna schemes have been damaged. Several road embankments have been eroded and approaches of bridge and culverts are washed away by the flood water.

Precautionary measures are being taken in Kaziranga national park to save its inhabitants from poachers and other calamities. In Himachal Pradesh, heavy rain lashed several parts today, affecting the normal life. In Shimla, a youth was killed and two others injured in the lightening during a thunder storm. The water level of Sutlej and local nullahs is on the rise in the state. In Bilaspur, it was recorded at 1600 cumex which is 75 feet more than last year’s level.

Meanwhile, the Indian Airlines has suspended its daily Delhi-Kullu flight till September 15, due to monsoon season.
