Several functions held in Goa today marking state Revolution Day

Goa is celebrating its Revolution Day on Friday. Several functions are organised all over the state to mark the occasion. The main state level function was held at Azad Maidan at Panaji on Friday morning where the State Governor Dr. Shivinder Singh Sidhu and the Chief Minister Mr. Digambar Kamat paid homage to the freedom fighters who lost their lives in Goa's freedom struggle. <br/> <br/>Recalling the yeomen services rendered by the freedom fighters in Goa's freedom struggle the Governor and the Chief Minister Mr. Digambar Kamat said, all must rededicate to preserve the hard earned freedom. <br/> <br/>The Chief Minister said the state government will solve the long pending demands of the surviving freedom fighters by 19th December this year. Similar functions were also held at Margaon and Ponda. <br/> <br/>AIR Panaji Correpondent reports, June 18 has great importance in the history of Goa's freedom struggle. It was on this day in 1946, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia a great nationalist and veteran freedom fighter gave a call to the people of Goa to unite and fight against the colonial regime. <br/> <br/>The Clarion call given on this day from the city square in Margaon Known as Lohia Maidan, gave fresh inspiration to the nationalist and like minded people to fight against the colonial rule. People not only from Goa but from other parts of the country responded to the call of Dr. Lohia. <br/> <br/>The historic event on June 18,1946 was beginning of a revolution, a revolution that strengthened the freedom movement and gave a definite direction to the Goa's freedom movement. It is in the fitness of things that June 18 is celebrated every year as Goa Revolution Day, with solemnity and pride to commemorate the revolution in 1946. <br/>
