In Bihar, the seventh phase of Panchayat elections is progressing peacefully amidst tight security arrangements. Elections is being held at 907 Gram Panchayats in 62 blocks of the state. Polling will continue till 5 in the evening, however in Naxal affected twelve blocks, the polling will end at 3 pm. AIR Patna correspondent reports that moderate voter turnout has been reported since morning due to the intense heat. There was no reports of major incidents of violence barring a few skirmishes between rival groups in Nalanda, Patna and Begusarai districts. Over three hundred persons have been arrested as a preventive measure. About 87 thousand rupees were recovered from the possession of arrested persons. Over 53 lakh 64 thousand voters will decide the fate of 97 thousand 505 candidates. The Panchayat elections will conclude on May 18 after the remaining three more phases. The eight phase of elections will be held on the 12th of this month. District authorities have filed chargesheets against 290 persons including 62 mukhias following their involvement in poll violence. The State Election Commission has instructed to start speedy trial against these persons in the fast track court. Meanwhile, the eight phase counting of votes of the panchayat election began today. In Sheohar district, counting of votes is continuing. The counting of votes in the state will conclude on May 29.
