Services consolidate top position in National Games

In the 34th National Games, Services have taken a commanding lead over their rivals in medal standings. At the end of the ninth day of the competitions on Monday, they had a haul of 44 gold, 33 silver and 26 bronze. Maharashtra were a distant second with 34 gold, 37 silver and 36 bronze. Manipur, gaining heavily from cycling and fencing, occupied the third spot with 30 gold, 19 silver and 19 bronze. Kavita Raut continued with her sizzling performance on the track as she shocked Asian Games gold medallist Preeja Sridharan for the second time in the athletics competition.Having earlier beaten Preeja for 10,000 metres gold, the 25-year-old Maharashtra tribal girl today notched up a double as she pipped the national record holder from Kerala for the 5,000 metres title. She also shattered the 12-year-old Games record of Sunita Rani in the event.
