Separatist leader Masarat Alam Bhat re-arrested in J&K

In Jammu & Kashmir, senior separatist leader Masarat Alam Bhat was re-arrested by Police outside Kot Bhalwal Jail in Jammu late last evening after he was released on the order of J&K High Court quashing his detention under Public Safety Act (PSA).

Alam was earlier released from the jail after his detention under PSA was quashed by a single-judge bench of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court headed by Justice Muzaffar Hussain Attar. This is the second time Alam has been re-arrested despite the State High Court order of quashing his detention.

The High Court yesterday quashed detention orders of September 1 and November 30, 2015 against Bhat under Public Safety Act, PSA, and had directed the government to release him. On April 17, Bhat was arrested under PSA and shifted to Kote Bhalwal jail in Jammu after his release by the new PDP-BJP government in Jammu and Kashmir had triggered a controversy. He was released in March this year after his detention of over four years under PSA.
