Sentinel Sequencing of 324 Covid samples reveals presence of Omicron variants in community

The Union Health Ministry said, the Sentinel Sequencing of 324 COVID-positive samples has revealed the presence of all Omicron variants in the community. Sentinel Sequencing is an ongoing surveillance activity across the country. The Ministry said, Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) sentinel sites referred these COVID-19 positive samples for sequencing to 22 Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium labs, from 29th December last year to 7th of this month. It said, no mortality or rise in transmission was reported in the areas where these variants were detected.<br />''<br />''The Ministry has initiated random testing of international travelers arriving at various Airports from the 24th of last month. Since then, over 13 lakh 57 thousand International passengers arrived in India from various airports. <br />''<br />''Out of which over 29 thousand randomly selected passengers were tested by RT-PCR. A total of 183 samples were found positive which were subsequently sent for whole genome sequencing to 13 labs. The Ministry said, the sequencing of 50 samples revealed omicron and omicron sub-lineages including recombinant variants. Health Ministry said, the Government is keeping a close watch on the COVID-19 situation in various States through the IDSP network, particularly on the transmission and hospitalisation trends.<br />
