Sensitive items' imports surge over 40 per cent

Imports of milk, foodgrains, edible oils and pulses, considered sensitive for domestic producers, surged 40.5 per cent in 2009-10, to over 65,500 crore rupees, compared to the previous fiscal.According to official data, import of milk and its products increased to 290 crore rupees in 2009-10, up 274 per cent from the previous fiscal. Similarly, import of foodgrains rose 259 per cent, to 118 crore rupees, and edible oils increased 63 per cent, to 25,975 crore rupees.
