Sensex up by 79 points

Tracking a firm trend in the global bourses, the Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange jumped 181 points or 1 per cent to cross the psychologically important 18,000 mark at 18,167 in opening trade today. After paring some of its gains the Sensex still stood 79 points or 0.4 per cent in the green at 18,065 a short while ago. Asian markets in Japan, China, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong Taiwan and South Korea rose between 0.5 per cent and 2.5 per cent today after Intel Corporation reported record second-quarter sales and Singapore raised its 2010 economic growth forecast. The US Dow Jones Industrial Average had gained 1.4 per cent overnight.
