Sensex up by 276 points in afternoon trade

The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange spurted 276 points, or 1.4 percent, to 19,862, in afternoon trade, a short while ago, on brisk buying by investors in bluechips. Earlier in the morning, the Sensex had opened 171 points higher, at 19,756.Other Asian markets in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore were trading mixed, amid news that Ireland has formally applied for aid from the European Union and the International Monetary fund.
